Product Description
2-Methoxyethyl acetoacetate (2-methoxyethyl 3-oxobutanoate, C7H12O4) is a clear, colorless to light yellow liquid. It combines the reactive methylene of an acetoacetate with an ether-containing ester group, and is miscible with common organic solvents such as alcohols.
Its active methylene undergoes Knoevenagel condensation with aldehydes. In the industrial nimodipine route, it condenses with 3-nitrobenzaldehyde to give 2-methoxyethyl 2-(3-nitrobenzylidene)acetoacetate, which then cyclizes with isopropyl 3-aminocrotonate to form the 1,4-dihydropyridine ring.
Because the ester group is carried unchanged into the final molecule, the 2-methoxyethyl ester cannot be replaced by methyl or ethyl acetoacetate when nimodipine is the target; using the matching acetoacetate avoids a later transesterification step.
