Product Description
Magnesium monoperoxyphthalate hexahydrate (MMPP) is the magnesium salt of monoperoxyphthalic acid, supplied as a white to off-white solid. It is soluble in water and polar solvents such as methanol, but poorly soluble in non-polar solvents.
As a peroxy acid, MMPP transfers an electrophilic oxygen atom to the substrate. This enables the conversion of ketones to esters or lactones (Baeyer-Villiger oxidation), alkenes to epoxides (Prilezhaev reaction), sulfides to sulfoxides and sulfones, and amines to amine oxides; it is also used for the oxidative cleavage of hydrazones.
Compared with m-CPBA, MMPP is less prone to explosive decomposition, more stable in storage and lower in production cost. Its phthalate by-product is water-soluble, which simplifies aqueous workup. The main limitation is poor solubility in non-polar media, so reactions are usually run in water, alcohols or biphasic systems.
